Today, January 20, 2021 is a day that will indeed go down in history! Kamala D. Harris, the first woman of color (African-American and Asian) to hold the second highest office in the US. If that isn’t enough, Vice President Harris is standing in the doorway of the strong possibility of becoming the first ever woman of color to be the President of the United States of America!
Wow! What must be flowing through Vice President Harris’ mind today? The accomplishment, the hope, the reverence of it all! What will VP Harris feel tomorrow? My thought is the excitement, weight and reality of it all. Maybe thinking that the entire world is expecting so much of her and maybe some are expecting nothing at all.
Some will be more concerned about the politics and some will be more concerned about what VP Harris will be wearing. For me, probably a little taste of both so stay tuned, ha! Rest assured we all will be watching some way or another.
Today’s inaugural ceremony felt tailored to what was needed to begin the healing process for the nation. President Biden’s heartfelt words gave the prescription to administer the things needed for Americans to unite. Will we?
American Poet, Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet ever at age 22 spoke ever so eloquently. Ms. Gorman recited; “We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. And this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated.”
Let that simmer for a minute!
Congratulations, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President Kamala D. Harris! Today we close one chapter and begin another. While no one knows what the future brings. My hope is that America builds from today. America heals going forward doing what is right, doing what is just and what is true! We have come so far and we have so much further to go! Please, let us not go backward. Let us all work with what we all share, not with what may be different. Let’s begin to change our minds in the right direction and even more so our hearts. For it is within our hearts where true and everlasting change begins.
